Morgantown City Council approved an update on a major project in Sunnyside Tuesday.
Officials from Grimm and Parker Architects discussed plans for the new University Place, which will provide residential and retail space in the Sunnyside area. The firm's representatives displayed drawings and talked about concerns such as parking and architectural style.
WVU has worked with about 120 people in the area of Grant Avenue, Houston Drive, Third Street and University Avenue to move those residents out so construction can start in late February.
"That particular area is blighted and was run down. So it was a perfect location, a very close walking distance to campus, on bus lines, close to the PRT, and so this will certainly transform this particular area, and I'm hopeful that it will also cause some private development from private retailers or other businesses to set up in the area," said Corey Farris, WVU Dean of Students.
University Place will feature more than 900 beds, as well as retail shops. Officials said the project is scheduled to be finished in August 2014.
