Over 100 guests came to see Pierpont Community & Technical College's first licensed practical nurse graduates walk across the stage. College officials said the highlight of the evening was the traditional pinning of the new nurses. For these 17 graduates, there are many career opportunities.
A LPN can be found in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, nursing care facilities, physician offices and in home care. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of LPN’s is expected to grow by 25% between 2012 and 2022. This's much faster than the average for all occupations. There's such a demand because of the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population.
There's also a general increase in demand for healthcare services. The LPN program is a five semester certificate in applied science. It's part-time with classes that are offered in the evenings and weekends.
