Plans to widen Route 20 near McDonald's and Buckhannon Academy Elementary School are still only in their beginning phase.
The proposed changes would add a third lane to the road. That would help alleviate some of the traffic congestion that tends to build up at the intersection of Route 20 and College Avenue.
"The goal is to put in a center lane. That would serve as a left turn lane for vehicles traveling south that would be turning on to College Avenue, but it could also accommodate northbound traffic that would be entering and exiting the new McDonald's restaurant that is there," said Carrie Bly, spokesperson for the WV DOT.
People in town hope these changes do take place.
"It does need widened right here to give a left hand turn to turn down College Avenue because when there are things going on at the college and most of the traffic comes up here, it really gets congested, so I'd like to see a left hand turn here," said Dalton Cutright of Buckhannon.
These plans are only in the preliminary phases right now.
Some of the plans would include making some changes to the sidewalks and surrounding land.
"I know there's been some concerns with the school there. There's also historical property that there are some concerns. We have to go by environmental guidelines, and we don't want to mess with that. We also have some right of ways that run into those areas," said Bly.
But, the Department of Transportation said they're looking into all options for the construction and they always try to make the smallest impact on the community.
"Whenever we do a design, we have multiple options when it comes to the design because we want to take all the factors into consideration. So, when it comes to impacting the community, we always look to make the smallest impact that we can," said Bly.
Construction could start on this project in the late spring or early summer of 2013.
