Preparing Your Home for Flood Waters Before They Seep In

Since the rain on Monday was expected to continue into the night, those who haven't prepared their home for flooding were urged to do so immediately. 5 News offered some tips on how you can prepare for the rain.
Emergency officials said the best way you can save your home from flood water damage is to prepare. It's better to take extra precautions before a flood, especially if you live in flood prone areas, rather than wait until your home actually starts to flood.
One way you can do that is by cleaning out drains so that water can pass through them. But, just in case that's not enough to stop the water from seeping into basements, it's best to move any furniture or important belongings to a higher level in the house. Also, it's a good idea to pack a bag with important items in case it would be necessary to evacuate your home. Don't forget to include things like medication.
"The biggest thing is prepare before it happens. You really need to have all your drains cleaned. Make sure that everything that is debris and everything that can float around, have it secured. If you have anything that needs to be moved to the upper levels, go ahead and move them to the upper levels in the chance that it may flood," said Capt. Mark Angelucci, Fairmont Fire Department.
If you do start to see flood waters in your basement or home, do not step in it or try to mess with the electric. Just call 911 and officials can help you turn it off safely.
