Rachel Shoaf, one of the two teenagers convicted in the murder of Skylar Neese, was sentenced to 30 years in Monongalia County Circuit Court on Wednesday morning. She will be eligible for parole in 10 years.

Shoaf, along with Sheila Eddy, admitted to killing Skylar Neese two years ago.

Shoaf's defense team requested that Shoaf, 17, be sentenced as a juvenile. They told the court that Shoaf has been receiving psychological treatment. The judge denied that request. However, Shoaf will remain in a juvenile facility for now. A hearing will be scheduled before her 18th birthday to decide where she'll be located after that.

In court, Shoaf apologized, saying "The person that did that was not the real me." She went on to say "I became scared caught up in something that I did not want to do". The prosecution, however, replied with claims that "the two girls joked about killing Skylar in science class."

Dave Neese, Skylar's father, asked the judge to give Shoaf a 40 year sentence. Skylar's uncle also addressed the court, and requested Shoaf be given the maximum sentence.

"Rachel Shoaf murdered my daughter in cold blood," said Dave Neese. "She can take her apologies and sit on them."

Shoaf was supposed to be a key witness in Sheila Eddy's murder trial, but a trial was avoided when Eddy pleaded guilty to first degree murder on January 24th. Eddy was sentenced to life in prison with mercy, which means she'll be eligible for parole in 15 years.

Comments like the first one here are a prime example of why capital punishment needs to be abolished, and to never look back. Our society is tearing itself apart...

NO murderer should EVER been given mercy! And they should both have been executed when found guilty! No exceptions.

The headlines are false! Rachel Shoaf is NOT sentenced to 30 years. She got a mere 10 years as she will get out on parole! You know it and so do I. The Eddy girl will be out in 15. WOW. You can murder anyone in COLD BLOOD and get less than some folks get for drugs. Says a lot about the 'tolerance' level of this generation and our poor excuse for legislators in this state! Bring back the death penalty for rapes and murders Governor! Or do you even care? I guess folks only 'care' when it is THEIR loved one that's murdered. No wonder this generation is learning that life isn't all that important. It's what our leaders/judges/lawyers/teachers/govt is proving by their inactions.
