If you found a Craigslist ad for a rental house in Bridgeport at $700 per month, everything included, you would be right to be suspicious. The Taylor County Sheriff's Department said these rental listings are just another kind of scam.
When Stonewood resident Tiffany McGary was looking for a new home for her and her four children, she saw one listed on Craigslist, located just over the Taylor County line, and thought it was too good to be true. She was right. When she emailed the owners of the listing, they told her they were on a mission trip in West Africa, and to rent the house, she would need to wire money to them first thing the next morning. Then the keys would be mailed to her.
McGary checked on other sites and found that the house wasn't actually for rent at all, but for sale by a local realty company. The pictures on Craigslist had been taken from the realtor's website. When McGary contacted law enforcement, they said this was definitely a scam. Now she wants to make sure others don't fall for this in the future.
"I just didn't want to see someone bite into this. An elderly person every last dime of their social security check into a scam like this and lose everything. Or a single mom like me that's looking for a place to rent and looking for a miracle in this day and age with the rental properties," McGary said.
If you suspect a scam, always call your local law enforcement before paying any money or giving away any personal information.
