Black Friday is right around the corner, and retailers all over the country are gearing up for big crowds.
Most people line up at major retailers, but there's another route you can take. That's supporting small businesses in your area.
"It's very important that we get local people to shop locally, all through downtown Elkins. The small business owner, they do struggle, and it's harder to compete with the larger "big box" companies. So, we run sales and do our best to get people downtown," said Pam Kelley, co-owner of The Closet.
Not only does shopping at a small business help out the owners, it also helps out your local economy.
Many times, when money is spent at these local shops, it goes back to the area the store is in.
"There are studies done that show people who shop locally, all that money will go back to their local communities, and support economic growth here locally. So, it's really important that people try to take that extra step to try to spend their money here locally," said Kate Reed, executive director of the Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce.
There's other benefits to shopping locally. That benefit is that you can find some unique, homemade gifts at these stores.
"My husband, Michael Kelley, makes our candles. So, they're all soy based. He makes everything from scratch, he'll put your picture on it. You can't get that at a bigger store," said Kelley.
So, when you're out this holiday season, remember those businesses right down the road from where you live.
"Business retailers do have an impact on the community, but we really encourage people to shop small as well because, you know, we're a non-profit, and money spent here on small businesses go to help the non-profits here, they go to help our local citizens, so more of that money goes back to helping our local communities," said Reed.
