CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Student leaders at public colleges and universities want Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to reconsider proposed higher education budget cuts.

Media outlets report that the State Advisory Council of Students plans to present a petition to Tomblin next month.

Tomblin has directed all state agencies to cut their budgets for the 2013-2014 fiscal year by 7.5 percent.

The reduction could lead to tuition increases at the state's two-year and four-year higher education institutions.

The students' petition says shifting the cost to students would make higher education unaffordable for many in West Virginia. It also says higher education is important to the success of the state's economy.
