As many of you may know, Thanksgiving Eve is a popular night to go out to bars with friends and family you haven't seen in a few months. 5 News has a few tips on how you can have fun, safely.
While many of you will be visiting with family from out of town, and don't have to go to work on Thanksgiving Day, some of you will probably be out Wednesday night. But be careful, because so will the cops.
Many departments will have extra officers out patrolling the roads, trying to keep everyone safe. Police said if you're planning on heading out to a few bars at night, during the day is the time to make a "get home safe" plan. Here are some ways you can do that:
Talk with your friends and decide who will be the designated driver.
You could also ask another family member who's staying in for the night to pick you up at a certain time.
Or you could look up local taxi services and put their number in your cell phone, so you'll have it ready to go.
It's, of course, better to set up a plan while you're sober, instead of making one after you've had a few drinks.
"Our thing is, we want people to enjoy their holidays. Not, somebody made a bad decision to drink and drive, and somebody else is just driving to visit their family and they get hit by a drunk driver. That's what we're going to be trying to stop tonight and every night," said Sheriff Joe Carpenter, Marion County Sheriff's Department.
Another tip police said you should do every night you're on the road is drive defensively. Always be aware of what's going on around you and be on the lookout for drunk drivers.
