127. That's the number of law enforcement officers across the country who were killed on the job so far this year.
That number is lower than last year's total.
In the Mountain State three police officers were killed on the job in 2012.
In August two members of the State Police were killed at a park and ride near the Clay-Roane County line. That's when Trooper Eric Workman and Corporal Mashall Bailey were shot to death.
The first officer killed in the Mountain State this year was Sergeant Michael Todd May of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.
Officers from the Mon County Sheriff's Department told 5 News there's still not a day that goes by that they're not reminded that he's gone.
"We, as well as police officers across the country, grieve at the death of any officer," Rick Adkins, the Chief Administrative Officer with the Sheriff's Department, said. "You're still out there doing your job. The best thing you can do for that person is keep doing what they were doing when they met that fate."
