During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, United Hospital Center is taking the time to collect blood considering the fact that it is often used by cancer patients.

Nearly 18% of all blood donated in the United States gets used by cancer patients. UHC alone uses more than 1,000 units of blood every year to support theirs. If there's a shortness of blood, some patients may have to delay treatments.

"The chemotherapy basically causes your counts to go low and once your counts go low, you help patients alleviate some of their symptoms such as fatigue, generalized tiredness, shortness of breath, pending on their blood counts, and so therefore, a lot of these patients consume blood," said Dr. Salman Osman, Oncologist.

The drives will be from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the hospital on Thursday and Friday.
