PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal shooting by a senior trooper in Mercer County.
The shooting occurred Thursday night after the trooper assigned to the Princeton detachment was awakened by his wife who was loudly confronting three men tampering with their vehicles, including the trooper's cruiser.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph says Senior Trooper B.D. Gillespie questioned the three after they left his driveway and one of the men became belligerent.
A state police news release says Gillespie attempted to take Timothy Hill into custody and a fight ensued. The news release says Hill attempted to disarm Gillespie, who was able to regain control of the weapon.
Police said Gillespie fired two shots at Hill, fatally wounding him.
State police say Gillespie was in uniform during the shooting.
