Two newly appointed West Virginia University Student Government officials are facing underage consumption violations.
Board of Governors member 18-year-old Renzo Diaz and newly appointed Chief of Staff 19-year-old Samuel Richardson are facing separate liquor law violations.
Diaz was arrested earlier this month of underage consumption, and Richardson was busted for apparently drinking near the Mountainlair parking garage.
Members of the WVU Student Government released a statement saying they would look into the situation.
You can read the full statement below.
On behalf of the West Virginia University Student Government Association, we are saddened by the allegations of underage intoxication levied against Renzo Diaz and Samuel Richardson. The alleged actions of Governor Diaz and Chief of Staff Richardson are neither reflective of the character of this administration nor taken lightly.
At this time, the Judicial Board is reviewing the allegations for each of the respective individuals. Then, proper actions will be taken in
accordance with the Student Government Association Ethics Code. "By taking proactive measures, we would like to reassert our commitment to transparency within this administration," says Student Body President Ryan Campione.
After dealing with numerous underage intoxication citations in past years, the Student Government Association realizes the importance of alcohol amnesty at the university. In the past semester alone, over 340 students were cited for Liquor Law offenses by the University Police Department. Because of this number, the Student Government Association hopes to work with the University Police Department to better educate West Virginia University students on the effects of alcohol. We hope that we can use this platform to decrease the number of underage intoxication citations in the upcoming future.
