FAIRMONT, W.Va (WDTV) - “I think through their hard work and by doing it together, they understand the perks of it.”

Deon Dobbs played high school ball at Fairmont Senior, collegiately at Marshall & then went on to play professionally overseas. He’s since hung up the high tops, and transitioned into the role of basketball dad to his sons Zyon & Zycheus.

“I think for them, living up to the ‘Dobbs legacy’ is in them because they love the game,” he said.

Zyon, who was a state champion and 1,000 point scorer at Fairmont Senior, played one season of Division I basketball at James Madison last year. In May, he transferred home to play for Fairmont state instead. Zycheus will enter his freshman season for the Polar Bears in 2020. From the outside looking in, the Dobbs name may seem to come with a lot of pressure. But in their home, the Dobbs’ don’t see it that way.

“A lot of people say that he has to live up to these expectations but he doesn’t have to do that he just has to play his game and he’ll be fine,” Zyon said.

Until both brothers begin their basketball seasons, they’ve been training with their father at Windmill Park in Fairmont each day. Zycheus, who is 6″1, is actually a couple of inches taller than his big brother was at his age. Zyon did sprout to his current height of 6″3, and he is using that to his advantage in one-on-one match ups while it lasts.

“I will always beat him but the games will probably get a little closer as he gets older so I’m going to keep beating down on him as much as I can,” he said
