WVU’s Martinez Finds Second Home in Morgantown
Sophomore forward leads Big 12 averaging 14 rebounds per game
MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) - WVU’s Esmery Martinez is originally from the Dominican Republic, but she is fitting in quite nicely in her second home in Morgantown.
The sophomore forward currently leads the Big 12 averaging 14 rebounds per game. She also ranks third on the team averaging 13 points per game. In each of her last four games, Martinez has recorded a double-double.
Martinez left her home in the Dominican Republic as a junior in high school to play at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Tennessee. She verbally committed to Mississippi State in 2018, then to Texas in 2019, and finally to WVU that August.
Off the court, Martinez has been playing with a heavy heart this season. In August, Hurricane Isaias destroyed her hometown in Hato Mayor Del Ray. Her childhood house was severely damaged in the hurricane. So, she turned to Mountaineer nation for help. Martinez and her teammates created a GoFundMe page, which raised $10,000 for her family.
