Two inmates dead at USP Hazelton

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - The US department of Justice has announced that two inmates were found dead at the United States Penitentiary Hazelton on Saturday.

One man, Jevonte L. Green, was found unresponsive around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday. Mr. Green was pronounced dead by responding EMS personnel after the workers who found him attempted to perform life-saving measures.

Another man, Marcelino Heredia, died around 11:00 p.m. the same day after an apparent assault. Mr. Heredia was pronounced dead by EMS after live-saving measures were attempted.

Mr. Green was a 36-year-old man who was sentenced in the Eastern District of Tennessee to 65-months for Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition and Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine. He had been in custody at USP Hazelton since February 6, 2024.

Mr. Heredia was a 48-year-old man who was sentenced in the Eastern District of Wisconsin to a 264-month sentence for Unlawfully Killing Another Human Being with Malice Aforethought and without Justification. He had been in custody at USP Hazelton since September 12, 2022.

This news comes after multiple reports about inmate deaths at Hazelton, including reports that non-CO personnel such as cooks, plumbers, and counselors were being required to work as COs (corrections officers).

The FBI has been notified of both of these cases.
