BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - Question: "I am new to the financial world, where should I start?"

Answer: (John Halterman, Beacon Wealth Management) "One thing that I always tell everybody is you should start with yourself. I think the big mistake that a lot of people make all the time is they save money hoping that one day they have enough money to meet whatever goals they have. Instead what I like a person to do is start by writing down why money is important to you. From there you need to start saving according to why it's important.

"As an example, maybe a home in the future, you want to be able to put a down payment on a home. So you got to be thinking how do I get that down payment. If it's retirement, when do you want to retire? At what age, you know what are you doing in retirement, how much income do you need?

"Whatever it is that is important to you about money, write all those things down and then start saving money towards those things. That's where you begin first because again don't allow the money to dictate you. Make sure you dictate what your money is doing for you."
