UPDATE: Man charged in connection with shooting of 8-year-old girl

A man has been charged in connection with the shooting of an 8-year-old girl in Cheat Lake Friday evening.

49-year-old Michael Nichols has been charged with illegally possessing a firearm. Nichols told police he was holding the gun when he accidentally fired it. Police say Nichols had a previous domestic battery charge that prohibited him from possessing a gun.

The bullet went through a wall at the residence, hitting the girl in the head. She remains in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

One person was shot in Cheat Lake, Friday night.

According to dispatchers, the shooting was reported in Rolling Hills Village around 6:35 p.m. One person was taken to the hospital. There's no word on the person's condition at this time.

The Monongalia County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
