UPDATE: Barrackville Police continue searching for suspects in attempted child abduction
It was around 6:30 p.M. December 7th when Barrackville police left their posts at the annual Christmas parade.
"It was an attempted abduction of a two year old who was with her grandmother," said police chief Charles Wilson
While police were at the scene within minutes, they were unable to catch the suspects.
They were described as a male driver wearing a plaid hat, and another man wearing a toboggan hat who jumped out of the back of a silver SUV and attempted to grab the child.
After interviewing the family, Chief Wilson says so far there doesn't seem to be any connection between the abductors and the child.
"We checked with the family, the description the grandmother did not know at all, they didn't know the vehicle," Wilson said "I checked with the father, the father didn't know of the vehicle or of anyone who fit the description,"
Chief Wilson says it's important for parents and guardians to stay alert- and not be afraid to report something suspicious.
"When you're out watch your child, keep your child close, if you see any vehicles that are suspicious, if they turn out your light and are looking at you, call someone," "We're usually just moments away, we can come in and check on it,"
Now, the police asks anyone in the neighborhood who may have security camera footage from that night to contact them.
While the community has reached out the the Chief with several theories and concerns… he says it's still too soon to know exactly why this happened.
"People have asked me do I think someone targeted someone here, I don't know, we don't have enough information,"
Chief Wilson says he expects police in the area to be on high alert.
"I'm sure officers are going to up their patrols, and there's going to be more officers present due to this,"
During their annual Christmas parade, Barrackville police responded to a report of an attempted abduction on Washington and Maple street.
According to police Chief Charles Wilson, a heavier male got out of the back of an older silver SUV and attempted to take a small child.
The attempt was unsuccessful, and after searching the area police were unable to find the described car.
Chief Wilson says there were three people in the car, at least two identified as male.
The driver was wearing a flannel shirt.
Barrackville police advise people in the area to be extra aware when out with their children.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact their department.
