Brothers closing historic 74-year-old business

GRAFTON, W.Va (WDTV) - After 74 years of opening their doors to the Taylor County community and beyond, one business is finally closing up shop.

Don and Kent Harman own Builders Service and Supply. They took the business over from their dad and uncles and they're ready to say goodbye to something that has been a part of them for more than 50 years.

"We sort of grew into it after college and we've been here ever since," Don Harman said. "Since high school, so close to 60."

The brothers have been helping their neighbors and fellow community members get the tools they need for home improvement projects. For Don, he questioned how much of the business would be a part of his future after his first day.

"I decided right then I wasn't going to stay here and work," Don said. "It was hot in the summer and it was too demanding and so forth, I decided my work would be someplace else."

Customers are sad to see it go.

"Sad to see it go," one told 5 News.

"I'm sad," said another. "Always stopped here coming from Fairmont in this direction and it's like an old time place."

Both are carrying on a family tradition much more rich than anything in the store.

"I was in for two years plus local reserves for another six or seven," said Don.

He served in the U.S. Army. For his brother, Kent, it's the same story.

"It's been a wild ride but it's been good," Kent said. "My brother mentioned the turnover of people, we've outlived most of our good contractors especially."

As they reflect back, they know --

"It's time," they said simultaneously.

They've made an impact in their community, life, and country.

"This was our life," Kent said.

"5 News: hard to say goodbye?
Kent: Yes -- very."

The shop will close in about six weeks.
