BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV)- “When leaves show their undersides, be very sure rain betides.”
Farmers used many different methods before the advancement of scientific instruments in predicting the weather. The main method was observation of things that occurred during certain weather conditions. One was using leaves know when rain was coming to a certain area.
The leaves of deciduous trees such as, maple and poplars were used in the leaf method for checking for rain. The leaves of these certain trees would turn upwards as a storm or rain approached.
The leaves are actually reacting to the sudden increase in humidity that usually happens before a storm. Leaves with soft stems can become limp in response to abrupt changes in humidity, allowing the wind to flip them over.
