Easy ways to winterize your home

HARRISON COUNTY, W.Va (WDTV) - The winter season is meant for spending time with your family, not for worrying about your water pipes freezing or the heat going out.

David Christopher, co-owner of Sandy's True Value, says the most important thing homeowners need to do to prevent issues, is to keep everything warm.

"Make sure all of their water lines and plumbing in their house is kept warm and out of the weather so it wont freeze," said Christopher.

Heating tape is a quick and easy buy for homeowners to keep their pipes from freezing, but not every house will need it this winter.

"Older houses aren't really well insulated underneath and if the water lines get so cold then they're going to freeze on you. For a lot of newer homes the water lines are already inside and underneath the basement so a lot of newer homes probably won't need it."

Another thing homeowners need to be aware of is their furnace filters; which need to be changed every 30 to 90 days. Not changing them could break your heater, leaving you in the cold.

"If you don't change the furnace filter then they get so much dust build up and then your furnace wont run," said Christopher. "And a lot of them will turn off and not run at all. Then you've got to call a heating and cooling guy out who will say you just need to change the filter a lot of times."

In addition to filters and heating tape, there are other remedies homeowners can buy to keep the heat inside their homes and the cold out where it belongs.

"Of course you have your heat tapes, but you have your weather stripping for doors and window kits to put over the doors and windows to keep the cold air out. And those stripping go around your doors where the tape just goes around your pipes."
