Drunken man allegedly leads police on chase; jumps in Monongahela river to avoid arrest

FAIRMONT, W. Va. (WDTV) -- A fairmont man is facing charges after police say he led them on a chase in a stolen car while intoxicated.

Police arrested Shane Burder, 34 on Tuesday. He's charged with fleeing with reckless indifference.

According to the criminal complaint, police spotted a black Dodge Caravan on Walnut Avenue matching the description of a stolen vehicle. Once Burden spotted police, he allegedly began to drive erratically on Fairmont Avenue and sped off.

Police say Burden was traveling 60 mph in a 25 mph zone. He also allegedly blew through multiple stop signs.

A short time later, police say Burden stopped the van, got out of the car and jumped in the Monongahela River to escape law enforcement.

According to the criminal complaint, Burden stayed in the river for a short time before swimming back to shore where he was arrested.

According to law enforcement, Burden failed a field sobriety test and blew a 0.095 on a breathalyzer test.

Burden is in jail, bail is set at $27,000.
