FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WDTV)-- After more than a year of construction, the Fourth Street Bridge is almost complete.
"It looks like it's about on track. I visited it last week and it looks like it's coming along very well," said Don Williams, DOH District 4 Manager.
Most of the construction itself is finished and the work is now focused on the streets that connect to the bridge. Workers are putting the final touches on paving and installing light poles. Right now, they hope to have it open by December 8th.
"Its got a lot of architectural work on it. It's concrete work that made it look like stone. The bridge work looks like it is mostly done. The work that remains is what we call the approach work. There is a bit of rough work left. They have to put in the asphalt, the paving, the striping, and getting ready so the cars can get to the bridge," said Williams.
The city hopes this addition will bring more business and recreation to this side of town. Once the bridge is open it will be a quick way gateway to get from downtown to Locust Avenue, Fairmont State, and the hospital.
"It's going to cut off a considerable amount of time in distance," said Williams.
Local business owners are also eager for the new addition.
"We are so excited about it and hopefully we will have more business in this local area, especially Locust Avenue," said Eun Ju Farrley, owner of Hair Plus.
"I think it is going to be good for Fairmont State. It's going to help with the traffic on Locust Avenue. Hopefully it will make it easier for people coming off of the interstate to get here and do business," said Robert Gidley, owner of College Lunch.
December 8th is the estimated date for completion. However, this is subject to change depending on the weather conditions. Triton Construction is handling the project.
