KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A judge sentenced a man to decades in prison for the murder of his wife.
Randall "Todd" Chapman, 47, was sentenced Thursday to 40 years behind bars.
In October, Chapman pleaded guilty to killing his wife, Shirlene Chapman.
The crime happened in September of 2017. Chapman originally told deputies his wife committed suicide. He claimed he fell asleep in the evening and woke up to find his wife bleeding and dead on the living room floor.
He could not tell deputies the last time he saw his wife alive.
In court Thursday, the defense attorney said Chapman does not remember what happened. He claimed the couple heavily drank before bed. The attorney also said Chapman took two of his wife's prescription pills. When he woke up, Chapman claims his wife was dead and he thought she committed suicide.
The assistant prosecutor asked the judge for the maximum sentence, saying there was no justification for what Chapman did.
