According to Harrison County Sheriff’s Lt. Rob Waybright, authorities are confident that speed was a factor in an accident that killed four people in Harrison County Tuesday night.
Officials say the car was traveling south on US 19, just before the Meadowbrook interchange, when it veered off the roadway and hit a parked car in a parking lot. The car then went over the embankment into a river.
Waybright says a witness account and the damage sustained by the vehicle indicate the vehicle was speeding.
The investigation into what caused the accident is still ongoing. Waybright says officers smelled alcohol in the vehicle, but they are still awaiting toxicology reports. Waybright says it is unclear if anyone in the vehicle had been drinking at the time of the accident.
The identities of the victims have not been released at this time.
