Kate's Corner: Coin drop

By  |

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WDTV) - WDTV In this Kate's Corner, we are going to try to get a quarter off the table by only touching a card.

Here's what you'll need:
- A cup
- A coin
- A plastic or index card

Lay the card on top of the glass. For a better flick, have the card a little further out on the edge of the glass. Put the coin on top of the card so that it's in the center of the glass. No flick the card.

You'r coin doesn't fly out. It drop down into the cup. Why?

Well, it all goes back to Newton's First Law of Motion. An object at rest stays at rest. We exerted energy on the card but not the quarter so the quarters inertia, or an object's tendency to stay at rest, was not overcome and the quarter fell into the cup. The card also slides out from the glass and the penny because there wasn't enough friction.
