Kate's Corner: Lava art

By  |

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - In this Kate's Corner we are going to make lava in a cup!

Here's what you'll need:
- A clear glass
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- Salt
- Food coloring

In your cup we are going to fill our glass up about more than half way of full. Add a few drops of food coloring for presentation and now slowly pour our vegetable oil in.

You'll notice how it floats on the top.

Now here's where the "lava" comes into it. Sprinkle some salt on top of the oil and watch. The lava is globbing up and down in the glass.

So what's happening here? It not real lava but the oil floats on top because it is less dense or lighter than the lighter. The salt though is heavier than both the water and oil. Since it is heavier, it sinks to the bottom but takes some of the oil with it. Once the salt dissolves and back up goes the oil.
