Kate's Corner: Smoke waterfall

By  |

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - In this Kate's Corner, we are going to make a smoke waterfall.

Here's what you'll need:
- Post-it note
- Paper clip
- Lighter (adult supervision)
- Glass

First, you'll need to roll up your post-it note into a tube. Leave the sticky side in. Then unroll your paper clip and then wrap half around a lighter or pen. Stick the post-it tube in the paper clip then bend the other half around the glass rim as a holder.

Light the top end with your lighter and watch the bottom end. The smoke begins to pour out and land in the bottom of the glass like a waterfall.

All the hot smoke molecules are being trapped in the paper tube. This prevents them from rising. The trapped smoke molecules are given time to cool off which releases the energy that allowed them to be light than air. The molecules then flow out of the bottom of the tube and don't rise up.
