BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV)- Thanksgiving is just one day away and the holiday travel rush is well underway.

Tuesday and Wednesday are usually the busiest days of travel leading up to turkey day. This year, AAA expects 50.9 million Americans to be traveling over the weekend. This is a 3.3% increase from last year and expected to be the largest number of travelers since 2005.

Although the national average of travelers is on the rise, our local survey showed more people are staying put this year. Fifty people were surveyed at local gas stations, 28 of which said they are staying home. Twenty-two people said they were traveling this year.

The Bridgeport AAA office shared travel tips with 5 News. Agents advise drivers to take care of all necessary car maintenance prior to leaving, especially tire repairs. Additionally, drivers should check their routes prior to leaving and take note of busy traffic times. It is important to always have a charged cellphone handy in case of an emergency or accident. Travelers can also use the AAA mobile app to locate the nearest gas stations and also find the cheapest gas prices nearby.
