MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. (WDTV) -- A Morgantown man has been charged with sexual assault and strangulation after an alleged incident at a Westover hotel.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to the Microtel motel on Howless Road after a report of a sexual assault there.

Police say when officers arrived, they spoke to the victim who told them that Robert Wheeler had choked her, held a pillow over her face, and gave her a hickey without consent. She also told officers that Wheeler had ripped the hotel phone out of the wall to keep her from calling 911.

Officials say the hotel room was a mess and there was blood in different areas and the victim had marks on her.

Wheeler is currently in North Central Regional Jail.
