Mountaineers shaving for annual beard shaving competition

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WDTV)-- Mountaineers lined up to shave their beards for the annual Mountaineer Week beard shaving competition at WVU.

Contestants have 30 days to grow their best beards in hopes of winning first place.

The first place winner will get $100, the second place winner gets $75 and the third place winner gets $50 in Sheetz Bucks from the university Sheetz.

Winners will also get plaques and bragging rights for having the best beard on campus.

The event was co-hosted by the Mountaineer and the reigning Miss West Virginia.

The panel of judges will judge on length, styling, grooming and contestants can even get creativity points for designs in their beards.

By shaving their beards today, at the same time, ensures that no one can cheat.

"Everybody has to sign up and everybody shaves at the same time in front of everybody, so we know nobody started with a little bit of a head start and then we just go the [whole] month," said contestant, Anthony Dowling.

The judging will take place in the Mountainlair on October 24.
