The United Methodist Church in Shinnston beat to a different drum Sunday morning.

The church was opened with a Native American Welcoming Song thanks to the West Virginia Committee of Native American Ministries.

Though West Virginia has one of the smallest populations of American Indians in the nation, there are many tribes still remaining and practicing traditions.

“Native people are here. Though they may be invisible at times they are here and we need to respect those cultures and share in those traditions," said Elle High of WV CONAM.

Few Shawnee and Cherokee remain in the Mountain State today although their descendants are alive and well.
