Schmitt's Saloon closes, new BBQ business prepares to move in
Schmitt's Saloon, the Morgantown spot known for its BBQ and live music, has shut its doors.
For five years it was ran by former West Virginia University fullback Owen Schmitt, who told 5 News that "...there wasn't much to be said" about the recent closing.
Schmitt explained that the times were good while they lasted, but he is looking forward to taking a break and focusing on other projects.
"I never had a break between retirement and opening up a business. It's time to get simple again."
He went on to say that he is looking forward to the extra time he will gain with family and friends, plans to continue making some great BBQ with his catering business, and wants to thank the community for the tremendous amount of love and support.
As for the future of the now vacant building, it won't be empty for long.
Another barbecue spot known as Smokin' Jacks is planning to open up in its place around the second week of July. CEO JD Mann spoke with 5 News on what the spot will offer:
"We will be a family style restaurant-bar with live entertainment, ranging from local to national talent specializing in live music and we will be adding some comedy to our mix. We offer the best food, smoked food and that is our focus."
Smokin' Jacks has been a part of the Preston community for more than 25 years. They are not affiliated with Schmitt's Saloon or Davisson Brothers, however, they are looking forward to the opening of their newest location.
