UPDATE | Murder charge dropped against Charleston man

A murder charge a man was facing in his wife's death has been dropped, according to information from the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office.

Frank Jay Cantley, 44, of Charleston, had been charged with first-degree murder after police say he told them he killed his wife at their home on Tinder Avenue. The incident happened Saturday.

The medical examiner's office says additional information is needed to determine the forensic cause of Stephanie Cantley's death. The office said it is not able to complete the work before Frank Cantley appears in court for a preliminary hearing on July 23.

It added that the state is not able to proceed with the case until it's determined to be a homicide.

According to a criminal complaint, Cantley called 911 claiming his wife had overdosed. When officers and medics arrived to the scene, they found Cantley's wife dead in their living room.

Police say Cantley's wife had obvious bruising around her neck.

Police then brought Cantley to the station for questioning where he made a statement to that he was angry and killed his wife.

As a result of the charge being dropped, Cantley will be released from jail.

Cantley was taken to the South Central Regional Jail and is being held without bond.
