Police: One dead in accidental Barbour County shooting

Barbour County, W.Va. (WDTV)-- The shooting death of a woman in Barbour County is being investigated as an accident, State Police told 5 News.

Alexis M. McDonald, 22, of Elkins, was shot Friday at a trailer home on Island Road just outside of the Junior town limits, investigators said.

She was driven from there to the Junior Volunteer Fire Department where first responders treated her for her injuries. She was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital via HealthNet but died there from her injuries.

McDonald turned 22 the day before the shooting.

Nobody has been charged yet in relation to the shooting.

Troopers told 5 News all early signs point to an accidental shooting and there is no threat to the public.

“[A] preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting was accidental, however, conflicting witness statements are prompting a more in-depth investigation to be conducted,” State Police Investigators said.

Investigators are also awaiting on results from evidence being examined at the State Police Crime Lab in Charleston.

Belington EMS and the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the scene with the Junior Volunteer Fire Department and State Police.
