RITCHIE COUNTY, W.Va. (WDTV)-- Delegate Jason Harshbarger (R-Ritchie) announced his resignation Wednesday morning, according the House of Delegates Communications Director Jared Hunt.

Harshbarger says in a letter that he has decided to pursue a private-sector employment opportunity that will not allow him to continue his service in the house.

"It has been an absolute honor to represent the people of the 7th District these past three years," Harshbarger says. "I have thoroughly enjoyed serving with you and my fellow legislators, and wish you continued success in your efforts to make West Virginia the place to live, work, and raise a family."

Hunt says the resignation will be effective August 30.

Hunt says the party executive committee of the seventh Delegate District, which covers portions of Pleasants and Ritchie County, will have 15 days starting August 30 to submit names for nomination to the Governor. The Governor will have five days from the receipt of the names to make the appointment.

Hunt says under the time frame they expect to have a new delegate in place by the next round of interim meetings.
