Tasty Tuesday: Byrd's House of Donuts
Byrd's House of Donuts in downtown Elkins opened in 2016 after a father son duo took a chance on an old donut shop to create something of their own.
"I've always wanted to open my own business and saw a shop that still had the donut equipment in it. So me and my son, we took all the money we had, invested in it, and on October 20, 2016, we opened up a donut shop," said co-owner Tommy Byrd.
Customers flock to Byrd's for the 31 donut flavors, hot coffee, and good, hometown conversation.
"The staff are very friendly, the donuts are amazing, it is good coffee, and it's a very comfortable place to sit," said customer Jason Brandon.
"I really like the people. The personnel, they're so nice and cooperative. They make an excellent product here," said David Denton, another customer who loves the strawberry filled donuts.
While donuts look simple, the process to make them is not. Tommy's son comes in at 11 o'clock every night to start making donuts for the next day.
"The yeast takes a long time; after it's mixed it has to rise, it has to rest, it has to be proofed, before you can actually make a donut out of it," Tommy said.
Getting the donuts from yeast to fryer takes several hours but filling, glazing, and decorating them is done in a matter of minutes.
Sure, the home-made donuts are delicious, but Tommy says his favorite thing about the shop is the knowledge that he has created something for the whole town to enjoy.
"I really like the fact that this belongs to us. This is Byrd's House of Donuts," he said.
In addition to coffee and donuts, the shop also sells pepperoni rolls and hot dogs, and has started making cakes.
