Tasty Tuesday: The Rambling Root

About two years ago, a Seattle native made his love of food and beer a reality in Fairmont.

The West Virginia Wesleyan grad opened the Rambling Root and has made his restaurant a comfortable place of his own.

Between locally produced food and beer brewed on site, there's a little something for everyone.

Owner D.J. Cassell has made West Virginia his home.

"It's pretty comfortable here," said Cassell. "We want all people to feel welcome when they come in here and you want to just come in and have a drink and sit on the couch and play a board game -- I got room for that."

Their atmosphere is comfortable, with a little bit of pacific northwest feel. From specials and beer written on chalkboards, to locally, on-site brewed beer.

"Brewing my own beer for about 10 years," Cassell said. "Two of the things I've been passionate about has been food and beer."

One of his goals is to let people try things they've never experienced before, whether that's with food or beer.

"Because we have the 29 taps, I can have something for everybody so I don't really need to brew to the masses," said Cassell. "I can brew weird stuff."

They still have some of the basics.

"Bacon and beer cheeseburger, a cheesesteak," said Cassell. "We do a Taco Tuesday."

But they'll switch it up too.

"I even have a chicken and bacon peanut butter sandwich on the menu."

Cassell says it has chicken, peanut butter, lettuce, tomato, sundried tomato mayo, banana peppers, bacon, cheese, and peanut butter.

"It's awesome," said Cassell. "Oh it's so good."

The Rambling Root is also one of the several restaurants that'll be in Morgantown next week for the American Red Cross' Taste of West Virginia.

"It's nice to have a little bit of exposure up in Morgantown," he said. People don't really know about us down here. But one of the things that we take to heart is helping out when we can."

"The restaurants that help us with Taste of West Virginia are really the essential ingredient to making that a success," said Jason Keeling with the American Red Cross. "We're going to have over 20 from around the area."
