The U.S. House will have a new leadership in 2019

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) -- The people voters elect to Congress in Tuesday's elections will be tasked with choosing the next Speaker of the House.

That's because Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) is leaving Congress in about two months.

George Washington University political expert Matt Dallek says Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is the favorite if Republicans maintain House control.

He says Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is the favorite if Democrats win control.

He also says both could face challenges from within their respective parties.

A new speaker will be chosen after the new Congress is sworn-in, that happens in the first week of January.
