Troopers identify suspect killed by police

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WDTV) -- State Police have identified a man shot and killed by police, Tuesday, near Spencer.

According to a press release, 65-year-old Bernard Cottrell was involved in an incident at a relative's home in Mineral Wells where he brandished, and discharged, a gun. He fled the scene and a "be on the lookout" was issued by Wood County dispatchers.

A short time later, a Roane County deputy got information that Cottrell's family was in the process of getting a mental hygiene petition because he was a threat to himself and others.

While on patrol, the deputy and a state trooper saw Cottrell driving along Route 14 near Spencer. That's when a vehicle pursuit started after officers tried to make a traffic stop. The pursuit ended on Route 14 at Randolph Road, when Cottrell apparently pointed a gun at the officers. The officers then shot in response to the threat. Cottrell died at the scene.
