UPDATE: WVU student passes away after fall from balcony

A West Virginia University student who fell over 30 feet from a balcony has passed away.

22-year-old Colton Hodge fell backward over a balcony on Forest Avenue in Morgantown Wednesday afternoon.

He was rushed to Ruby Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery.

The university announced that Hodge had passed in a statement on Friday, stating:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Colton Hodge, 22, of Falls Church, Virginia. Colton was a third-year student majoring in exercise physiology. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Colton’s family and friends,” said Corey Farris, associate vice president and dean of students.

Counseling services are being provided through the Carruth Center. The Office of Student Life has been in touch with Colton’s family to offer support and comfort.

A bell-ringing service in his honor will be announced at an appropriate time."

A WVU student was injured after falling over a balcony, Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Morgantown Police Department, authorities responded to Forest Avenue where they found emergency crews providing medical aid to 22-year-old Colton Hodge.

Hodge suffered critical injuries after he fell backward, more than 30 feet from a balcony. He was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital to undergo emergency surgery.

Hodge is listed in critical condition.

Morgantown Fire Department, Monongalia County EMS, and the Morgantown Police Department responded to the scene.

In a statement, WVU Dean of Students Corey Farris said, " We have been in touch with Colton’s family to offer our support during this difficult time. The University also has support and counseling services available through the Carruth Center for students, faculty and staff.”
