BUCKHANNON, W. Va. (WDTV) - West Virginia Wesleyan College students had a chance to celebrate First Generation Day on Thursday.

The school's Student Success Center provided first generation students with postcards and posters to say thank you to those who are helping them in their journey.

These students decorated part of the Benedum Campus Center with messages on why college is so important to them. Then they took pictures and posted those pictures on the WVWCFirstGen Instagram account.

Organizers say they want to recognize those students who are first in their families to go to college.

"About 25% of our student population are first gen. It's a huge portion of our students and it's a big deal for them to be here at Wesleyan," said Kristin Ring, First Generation Mentor at Wesleyan.

On Monday, students also had a chance to watch "A Walk in My Shoes" documentary. On Tuesday, faculty and staff had lunch with First Generation students.
