What will happen locally if the government shuts down?

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WDTV) -- If the federal government shuts down Friday night, here are some things to keep in mind:

First, the shutdown will not keep the U.S. Postal Service from delivering mail. USPS is an independent equity, funded through the sale of its products and services and not be tax dollars.

Also, monthly social security benefits should continue to be paid. They are an exception from the shutdown, according to an action plan posted in December by the Social Security Administration. However, services including the issuing of new or replacement Social Security cards and replacement Medicare cards could be suspended.

The government has until midnight Friday to pass a new spending bill and avoid a shutdown.
