Black Bears complete 5-0 home stand on Christmas in July

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. Highlights of West Virginia's 14-4 win over Batavia on Tuesday night.

GRANVILLE, WV – The West Virginia Black Bears put on an explosive offensive performance to beat the Batavia Muckdogs 14-4 on Tuesday night.

The Black Bears lead 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning and began their offensive dominance with four runs in the inning. Julio De La Cruz gave West Virginia a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer to left field. With two men on, Jared Oliva grounded into a force out, but scored Jon Schwind. Deon Stafford Jr. put the Black Bears ahead 5-0 with an RBI single to centerfield.

Batavia scored two runs in the top half of the sixth inning but West Virginia put up five runs in the bottom half of the inning. De La Cruz, Bligh Madris, Stafford Jr. and Tristan Gray all drove in runs during the Black Bears’ big inning.

Sandy Santos and Brett Pope started the seventh inning off by reaching base on errors. Oliva drove in Santos to make it an 11-3 game. Madris reached first on another error by Batavia and Pope capitalized on the Muckdogs’ mistake and reached home. Stafford Jr. knocked in a run with a sac-fly to left and Gray gave the Black Bears a 14-3 lead with an RBI single to center.

Brandon Waddell went five innings striking out seven and only gave up one hit in a rehab start for the Black Bears. All ten of West Virginia’s hitters finished the game with at least one hit.

The Black Bears (22-12) finished their home stand 5-0. West Virginia will travel to Auburn to begin a three-game series with the Doubledays. The Black Bears will return home on August 2 after a six-game road trip.
