BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. press release:

Morgantown, WV – The last of six statewide qualifiers was conducted today at The Pines Country Club and the field for the 84th playing of the WV Open Championship is officially set. A total of 19 players teed off Thursday morning looking to claim one of the final eight qualifying spots into the championship field. The Pines Country Club was in pristine shape for the field as afternoon rain and storms were in the forecast with a front incoming, but with some fortunate changes, the players stayed completely dry all day.

Mike Koreski of Parkersburg won medalist honors with his round of even-par, 71. Koreski finished three strokes clear of the runner-up score of 74 posted by Jacob Nickell of Wheeling. Following the conclusion of the qualifying round, a playoff at 79 between four players for the last three spots and the first alternate began on #18. Marco Oliviero of Bridgeport and Tyler Kondo of Morgantown made bogeys on the first playoff hole to secure their spots into the field as Chris Stansberry and Tom Macaulay made double-bogeys to continue the playoff for the final spot. On the second playoff hole, sixty-nine year-old, Tom Macaulay of Fairmont secured the final spot into the field with a world-class par on the lengthy par-4 18th playing into the wind. Chris Stansberry of Morgantown made bogey to settle for the first alternate position. Caleb Cook of Oceana was able to best Michael Spitak’s score on #18 to finish as the second alternate in a separate playoff at 80.

West Virginia Open week will kick off with Monday’s Pro-Am competition, followed by Tuesday afternoon’s Coke Shootout, and finally with the playing of the 84th WV Open on Wednesday, July 19th through Friday, July 21st.
