Huggins Tabs Matthews Jr. as Most Improved Player

Rising sophomore forward Emmitt Matthews Jr. showed glimpses of what could be when he broke out for 28 points against Texas Tech in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament in 2019.

In fact, the Tacoma, Washington native scored in double figures in four of the Mountaineers final six games a year ago and finished the season averaging 5.4 points and 3.1 rebounds.

The good news is that Coach Bob Huggins thinks Matthews Jr. is destined for big things in year two. He called him the "most improved player" that the team has seen in a long time.

"I think he's grown a little bit and added some weight, but his skill level has really improved and that means hes obviously put a lot of time in," Huggins said.
