West Virginia football's Evan Staley was put on scholarship in the spring of 2018 after receiving the Tommy Nickolich Award for WVU's top walk-on. Now, the place-kicker enters his junior campaign with national recognition.
Staley was named to both the Groza Award and Wuerffel Trophy watch lists today. The Groza Award is given to the best place-kicker in college football, while the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Staley went 16-for-20 in field goal attempts last year and ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 in overall scoring. He holds a streak of 12 consecutive made field goals entering the 2019 season.
