'The Opening Statement' on WVU-East Carolina
Dana Holgorsen began his weekly press conference this afternoon saying he was excited for the team's "5 and a half" day turnaround to prepare for Saturday's game against East Carolina... tongue firmly planted in cheek as he said that. But indeed the Mountaineers do have one fewer day than usual to prepare for the team's home opener. Fox Sports Two has the broadcast which will kick at noon under expected perfect weather conditions for early September.
The performance and the effort were not disappointing but with any loss for the Mountaineers, the result obviously was. Now the challenges on a short week are to rebound and recover against East Carolina.
ECU has given West Virginia trouble in the past, most notably their 3-touchdown win in Greenville back in 2008. But much has changed since the Pirates were a semi-regular opponent for the Mountaineers during WVU's Big East days. ECU went just 3-9 last fall and they are coming off a 20-point loss to James Madison last Saturday.
Expect the Pirates to go to the air with regularity. They did so 53 times in 83 plays last week against JMU.
After Sunday's loss to Virginia Tech, many of the coaches talked about the need to play more guys on both sides of the ball. Although 55 of the 80 players on the travel roster got in the game, many will need to play more snaps as younger players mature and the season progresses.
