BRIDGEPORT, W.VA (WDTV) - #15 - Sept. 22 - Liberty 24, Grafton 21 (3OT)/Longest HSFB game in state in 2017

Game #15 took much longer than 48 minutes to decide. In the longest high school football game in the state this year, Liberty outlasted Grafton 24-21 in triple overtime. Chance Howell's 28-yard field goal on the final possession of the third OT was the difference.

#14 - Mar. 18 - Notre Dame 63, Ravenswood 55/Irish win first SSAC state title

Game #14... In tears on the floor of the Charleston Civic Center, Jarrod West said, "We finished it". Indeed the Notre Dame boys basketball team did finish off their first SSAC hoop title, holding off a late rally from Ravenswood to win 63-55. West scored 29 points as the Irish shook off a few years of state tourney losses to claim the championship.

#13 - May 27 - WV Wesleyan 1, West Florida 0/Bobcats advance to NCAA semifinals

Game #13... Career victory #1,000 for Wesleyan softball head coach Steve Warner came on the biggest stage in Division 2 softball. The Bobcats defeated West Florida 1-0 to advance to the semifinals on the national tournament. Hannah Vet tossed a 4-hit shutout. Wesleyan would go on to finish third in the tourney.

#12 - Sept. 22 - University 29, Fairmont Senior 27/Hawks edge West en route to 10-0 season

Game #12... In a week five matchup of unbeaten teams, University High edged Fairmont Senior 29-27. Clay Bailey threw for 272 yards, handing West their lone loss prior to the Super 6. The Hawks went on to a 10-0 regular season.

#11 - Apr. 14 - West Virginia 5, TCU 4/WVU takes 2 of 3 from Big 12 champs

Game #11... The start of a huge series victory for the WVU baseball team. In game one of their three game set with 3rd-ranked TCU, West Virginia shook of a 3-run, ninth inning for the Horned Frogs to win in a walk-off. Ivan Gonzalez's sacrifice fly scored Preston County native Jimmy Galusky as the Mountainners won 5-4. They would take two of three in the series.

#10 - June 1 - Ravenswood 5, Tygarts Valley 4 (8 inn.)/Bulldogs fall in state semifinal

We stay on the diamond for game number-10. Tygarts Valley advanced to the state baseball tournament for the first time in 37 years. In their semifinal against Ravenswood, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 third inning lead, but the Red Devils came from behind to win in extras, 5-4.

#9 - Feb. 18 - West Virginia 83, Texas Tech 74 (2OT)/WVU outlasts Red Raiders

To the Coliseum for game number-9... the longest game of the season for Bob Huggins and company saw the Mountaineers outlast Texas Tech 83-74 in double overtime. Jevon Carter scored 24 points as the Mountaineers avenged an overtime in Lubbock from a month earlier.

#8 - Nov. 3 - Philip Barbour 21, Robert C. Byrd 20/Colts clinch playoff berth with blocked FG

Game #8 brings us to Philippi. Needing a victory to qualify for the postseason, Philip Barbour trailed Robert C. Byrd 20-8 at the half. But the Colts rallied with the help of blocked punt return for a score and a blocked field goal at the gun to win 21-20. PB finished the regular season 8-2 after going 1-31 in their previous 32 games.

#7 - Mar. 14 - Fairmont State 86, Wheeling Jesuit 80/Falcons advance to NCAA Elite 8

Game #7... A victory to send Fairmont State to the NCAA men's basketball Elite 8. Wheeling Jesuit chipped away at a 17-point second half deficit to get within five but the Falcons held on 86-80. Thomas Wimbush scored 26 points as FSU won the Atlantic Region. They went on to play in the national championship game.

#6 - Mar. 8 - Herbert Hoover 55, Robert C. Byrd 51 (2OT)/RCB denied state tourney spot

Game #6... Playing for a spot in the boys basketball state tournament, Robert C. Byrd and Herbert Hoover played well beyond 32 minutes. A Brice Roseborough 35-footer at the buzzer extended the Class "AA" regional into OT. But the Huskies prevailed after a second extra session, winning 55-51.

#5 - Nov. 4 - Robert C. Byrd 3, Charleston Catholic 2 (OT)/Eagles win 1st state soccer title

Another Flying Eagles contest for game number-5. RCB faced Charleston Catholic for the Class "AA" girls state soccer championship and in the third minute of overtime, Casey Underwood gave Byrd the victory 3-2. It secured the first soccer state title for RCB.

#4 - Mar. 6 - West Virginia 77, Baylor 66/WVU wins 1st Big 12 tourney title

Game #4... A championship-clinching effort for the WVU women's basketball team. In the Big 12 title game, the Mountaineers knocked off second-ranked Baylor 77-66. Tournament MVP Tynice Martin dropped in 32 points as WVU defeated three top 20 teams en route to their first Big 12 tourney title.

#3 - Mar. 18 - Fairmont Senior 59, Chapmanville 54/West rallied from 10 down to defend title

Back to the Charleston Civic Center for game #3... a furious second half rally by Fairmont Senior propelled the Polar Bears to a second consecutive state title. West closed the game on a 14-4 run to defeat Chapmanville 59-54.

#2 - Dec. 1 - Bluefield 29, Fairmont Senior 26/Polar Bears edged in state final

More from the Polar Bears in game #2... In the most competitive Class "AA" football championship in five years, Fairmont Senior fell just short against Bluefield, 29-26. West jumped out to a five point halftime lead but the Beavers shutout Fairmont in the second half as the Bears fell in the Super 6 for the second straight season.

#1 - Mar. 16 - Lincoln 63, Bluefield 59/Cougars pull upset of state tourney

And finally... the game of the year in local sports was a monumental state tournament upset. 7th-seeded Lincoln stunned 2nd-seeded Bluefield 63-59 in the quarterfinal round. The Cougars entered states with a 12-13 record but used a 28-point effort from Chase Riley and a 23-point fourth quarter to eliminate the Beavers and advance to the state semis.
